Summary

Reporting to the Director of Program Design & Implementation, the Senior Mathematics Content & Training Specialist serves as a key team member and an active participant in delivering robust, expert-level professional development programs focused on mathematics teaching and learning. The primary responsibility is to create mathematics and learning content to help propel The Center’s core mission. The Specialist gathers information, writes, organizes, and edits the content based on the latest math research grounded in evidence. The Specialist works to provide ongoing internal training for awareness-building and expert program content leadership for consumption by classroom teachers, coaches, literacy leaders, policymakers, and all community stakeholders. A strong understanding of the interrelationship between literacy and mathematics is a critical aspect.

Position Responsibilities & Core Functions

• Provide expertise to all K–12 mathematics-related programming, including the development, refinement, and expansion of current and future mathematics professional learning initiatives grounded in evidence-based practices
• Develop, provide, and/or facilitate instruction, mentoring, coaching, large and small group professional learning, professional learning communities, lesson study, and modeling of high-quality mathematics instruction for educators, instructional leaders, administrators, parents, and stakeholders
• Initiate and sustain relationships with statewide and national mathematics education leaders, researchers, administrators, mathematics specialists, educators, stakeholders, and policymakers; discern needs related to research, professional learning, curriculum, instruction, and assessment
• Implement and lead strategies to develop, promote, and secure partnership opportunities related to mathematics professional learning and instructional improvement
• Provide targeted support to district-level, school-level, and state-level mathematics educators, including coaching and systems-level planning
• Coordinate strategic efforts and communications with community partners, stakeholders, policymakers, and internal staff to strengthen mathematics initiatives
• Collaborate with appropriate staff to provide data, outcomes, and evaluative information for dissemination to the media, funders, policymakers, and the public
• Coach and mentor educators on evidence-based mathematics instructional practices, including mathematical discourse, task selection, assessment, differentiation, and equitable instruction
• Create, develop, refine, select, and distribute mathematics professional learning materials aligned with NCTM Standards and Effective Teaching Practices
• Provide professional learning supports both in-person and virtual
• Produce written materials, presentations, and articles on mathematics education topics for public dissemination as requested
• Demonstrate sensitivity to the interrelationships of people and functions across The Center
• Provide leadership and guidance while promoting a positive, collaborative work culture
• Fully comply with board-approved policies and procedures
• Contribute to team efforts and assist with additional Center initiatives as directed
• Accept other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree from an accredited educational institution (Mathematics Education or related field preferred)
• Certification in elementary or secondary education with a minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience, including at least three (3) years of successful K–12 classroom teaching
• Specialized preparation or credentials related to mathematics leadership, mathematics coaching, or mathematics specialist roles preferred
• Demonstrated experience designing and delivering mathematics-focused professional development grounded in evidence-based instructional practices
• Deep knowledge of K–12 mathematics content, pedagogy, and assessment, aligned with NCTM Standards and position statements
• Knowledge of Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), BESE, and local school policies related to K–12 mathematics instruction
• Strong understanding of student mathematical development, including conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, reasoning, and problem solving
• Ability to assess student, teacher, school, and district mathematics data; analyze results; and recommend instructional actions for improvement
• Awareness of diverse learner needs, including cultural, linguistic, and developmental considerations in mathematics learning
• Proven success supporting educators in implementing equitable and high-impact mathematics instruction
• Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced professional learning environment

Physical Demands/Requirements  

• Flexible work hours depending on operational and programmatic needs, with most falling during the standard workday; evening and weekend hours may also be required 
• The ability to see, speak, hear, write, and move to execute job responsibilities at The Center office and in the broader community  
• May require extensive walking, lifting, and/or moving of materials and equipment up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods of time 
• Moderate travel in-state (Louisiana) and minor out-of-state may be necessary

Pay: From $49,041.23 per year
