Corporate Legal Counsel Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a corporate legal counsel in Texas?
You must hold an active license from the State Bar of Texas, which requires passing the Texas Bar Exam administered by the Texas Board of Law Examiners and completing character and fitness review. Most in-house corporate counsel roles also require a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and prior experience in private practice or a corporate legal department, typically in transactional, compliance, or regulatory work.
How much do corporate legal counsels make in Texas?
Corporate legal counsels in Texas earn a median of about $154,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,340 for the lowest 10% to over $349,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire corporate legal counsels in Texas?
Employers hiring corporate legal counsels in Texas right now include Dorsey & Whitney LLP, ExxonMobil, and Holland & Knight, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 energy, technology, and financial services headquarters means in-house legal teams here tend to be large and hire continuously.
Which Texas cities have the most corporate legal counsel jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Houston account for the largest share of corporate legal counsel openings in Texas. Houston's energy and petrochemical sector drives heavy demand there, Dallas draws significant hiring from financial services and telecommunications headquarters, and Austin's fast-growing technology industry has expanded in-house legal teams considerably over the past decade.
Are there remote corporate legal counsel jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most legal roles. About 18% of corporate legal counsel openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based and advisory nature of in-house counsel work. Contract review, compliance counseling, and regulatory analysis are the functions most commonly performed remotely, while roles requiring frequent executive or board interaction tend to remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a corporate legal counsel in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Texas-based company as a contracts administrator, legal analyst, or junior associate in a law firm that serves corporate clients, then transitioning in-house. Large Texas employers such as energy majors and regional financial institutions run structured summer associate and new-attorney programs that can lead directly to staff counsel offers. Holding an active Texas Bar license and demonstrating experience in a specific practice area such as transactional work or regulatory compliance gives candidates without extensive in-house experience a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to corporate legal counsel jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to corporate legal counsel jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers across the state. Search available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to the employer.
