General Counsel Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a general counsel in Texas?
To become a general counsel in Texas you must hold an active law license issued by the State Bar of Texas, which requires passing the Texas Bar Examination administered by the Texas Board of Law Examiners. Most employers expect a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited school followed by several years of in-house or law firm experience. Building expertise in a sector prominent in Texas, such as energy, technology, or financial services, significantly strengthens candidacy.
How much do general counsels make in Texas?
General counsels in Texas earn a median of about $154,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,340 for the lowest 10% to over $349,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general counsels in Texas?
Employers hiring general counsels in Texas right now include Office of the Attorney General, Alvarez & Marsal, and Celanese, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major energy producers, and fast-growing technology firms means demand for senior in-house legal leadership remains consistent across both established corporations and high-growth companies.
Which Texas cities have the most general counsel jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas have the most general counsel openings in Texas. Houston's dominance in energy and petrochemicals drives consistent demand there, Dallas attracts large financial services and telecommunications legal departments, and Austin's expanding technology sector has made it a growing hub for in-house counsel roles at both established companies and venture-backed startups.
Are there remote general counsel jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields, since general counsel work is fundamentally desk-based and advisory rather than on-site. About 4% of general counsel openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the role's natural compatibility with distributed work. Contract review, regulatory analysis, and board advisory functions are the portions most commonly performed fully remote.
How can I get hired as a general counsel in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is securing an associate general counsel or corporate counsel role first, which large Texas employers like major energy companies, hospital systems such as HCA Houston Healthcare, and regional banks regularly post as entry-level in-house positions. Law school clinics at Texas Law or SMU Dedman, followed by a clerkship or a stint at a Texas-based firm advising corporate clients, builds the transactional foundation employers expect. Passing the Texas Bar and targeting legal operations or compliance analyst roles are concrete lateral moves that open the in-house door.
