Certified Medical Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Certified Medical Assistant job qualify for CPT?

Yes, if your degree program requires clinical or healthcare training as a curricular component, a CMA role can qualify for CPT. The position must directly relate to your field of study, and your DSO must authorize it on your I-20 before your start date. Roles in outpatient clinics, physician offices, and hospital systems commonly meet this standard when the job description aligns with your coursework.

Does CPT authorization cover full-time CMA positions?

CPT can be authorized as either part-time (under 20 hours per week) or full-time (20 hours or more). Full-time CPT is permitted but carries a significant consequence: 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT after graduation. If you plan to use OPT to stay in the U.S. after completing your degree, part-time CPT is the lower-risk path for longer engagements.

What documents does a CMA employer need to process my CPT hire?

You'll need your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the employer name and authorized dates, your valid F-1 visa, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. Employers enrolled in E-Verify will also run an employment eligibility check through that system. Some healthcare employers additionally require proof of your medical assisting program enrollment or a letter from your DSO confirming the academic requirement.

How do I find CMA employers who are familiar with F-1 CPT?

Healthcare employers with prior experience hiring F-1 students handle the I-9 and work authorization verification process more smoothly than those encountering it for the first time. Migrate Mate lists employers with verified sponsorship and work authorization filing history, so you can prioritize clinics and health systems that have successfully onboarded international students before, reducing the risk of an offer falling through over authorization confusion.

Can I switch CMA employers while on CPT?

Yes, but your current CPT authorization is employer-specific. Switching employers requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO, which means a new I-20 listing the new employer's name and your updated start date. You cannot begin working for the new employer until that updated I-20 is issued. Confirm the new role still meets your program's curricular requirement before initiating the DSO request.
