Can I work as an LPN on CPT before passing the NCLEX-PN?
CPT authorizes the work experience portion of your curriculum, but your state nursing board controls what clinical tasks you can legally perform without a license. Most states prohibit using the LPN title or performing LPN-scope duties until you pass the NCLEX-PN. Your DSO can authorize the CPT placement, but you and your employer must still comply with your state's nurse practice act throughout.
Does full-time CPT as an LPN affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Any full-time CPT used before graduation makes you ineligible for post-completion OPT. If your nursing program's clinical rotations require full-time CPT placements across multiple semesters, confirm with your DSO how many full-time terms you're accumulating. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters it's used.
How do I find LPN employers who regularly hire F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify LPN and clinical nursing roles at employers with a history of hiring F-1 students. Prioritize facilities that are E-Verify enrolled and have HR teams familiar with DSO authorization paperwork, since those employers already understand the learning agreement and reporting requirements that make CPT placements compliant.
What documentation does my employer need to support my CPT authorization?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter or employment agreement specifying your role title, start date, weekly hours, and supervisor name. Many programs also require a learning agreement that maps the clinical tasks you'll perform to specific course competencies. Collect both documents before submitting your CPT authorization request, since missing either one delays approval and can push back your start date.
Can I switch LPN employers mid-semester on an existing CPT authorization?
No. Each CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, job title, and date range. If you change employers or significantly change your role during an authorized CPT period, your current authorization becomes invalid. You must return to your DSO, obtain a new I-20 reflecting the updated placement, and have the new employer sign a fresh learning agreement before you can begin work at the new facility.
