Get Access To All JobsComputer Science CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work for part-time CS internships, or only full-time positions?
CPT works for both part-time and full-time positions. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT counts against your OPT clock only after 12 cumulative months, so shorter full-time engagements, like a single summer internship, are generally safe.
Can I do CPT at a startup that doesn't have an established HR or immigration team?
Yes, but the employer still needs to meet two requirements: E-Verify enrollment and the ability to produce a compliant offer letter with your job title, start date, and work location. Many CS startups have completed this for prior international hires. Ask your recruiter specifically whether the company is registered with E-Verify before your DSO submits the CPT authorization.
What happens if my CPT CS role is remote? Does location affect my authorization?
Remote CPT is permitted, but your DSO needs to list the work location on your I-20 accurately. If you're working remotely from your university city, that address typically goes on the authorization. If the employer is in a different state, confirm with your DSO how they handle remote placements, since some schools require additional documentation for out-of-state or fully remote arrangements.
How do I find Computer Science employers that regularly hire F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter CS roles by employers with documented work-authorization filing history, which is a reliable signal that a company understands CPT and has completed E-Verify enrollment before. That's a faster starting point than applying broadly and finding out during the offer stage that a company has never processed F-1 work authorization.
Can my CPT CS job count toward the practical training requirement if it's only loosely related to my major?
Your DSO makes that determination based on your program's curriculum requirements, not USCIS. For CS students, most DSOs require a direct connection between the job's technical function and your coursework. A full-stack engineering role in a non-tech industry typically qualifies. A general operations or project management role at a software company usually doesn't, even if the employer is a tech company.
