CPT Contract Jobs
Contract roles are a natural fit for CPT because the project-based structure maps directly onto academic requirements: your school needs to tie the work to your curriculum, and contract positions with defined scopes make that documentation straightforward. Many graduate programs in business, engineering, technology, and data science explicitly support contract CPT as a way to gain industry exposure while still enrolled.

Get Access To All JobsContract CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can contract positions qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, contract positions qualify for CPT as long as the work is directly related to your major and your school authorizes it. The key requirement is that the role connects to your curriculum, not that it's a permanent or full-time arrangement. Your DSO will review the offer letter from the contracting employer and update your I-20 accordingly. Many programs explicitly encourage contract CPT because the project scope makes the academic connection easy to document.
What does an employer need to provide for contract CPT?
The employer needs to provide a signed offer letter describing the role, the expected hours, the start and end dates, and how the work relates to your field of study. There is no USCIS filing, no employer fee, and no government approval process. Your DSO handles the authorization through your school. The offer letter is the critical document, so make sure the job description language clearly reflects your major or program.
Should I take a contract CPT role part-time or full-time?
During the academic semester, part-time contract CPT (under 20 hours per week) lets you balance coursework without jeopardizing your standing. Full-time contract CPT is an option during summer or winter breaks when your course load allows it. The important consideration is cumulative full-time CPT: 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your entire program makes you ineligible for OPT, so tracking your hours carefully matters if you plan to use OPT after graduation.
How do I find contract roles that are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find contract positions that are open to CPT authorization. The platform filters roles by work authorization type, so you're not sifting through listings that require permanent residency or citizenship. Contract CPT roles also appear through your university's career center and employer information sessions, particularly at schools with strong industry partnerships in technology, consulting, and engineering.
What academic programs are most commonly approved for contract CPT?
Engineering, computer science, data science, business analytics, finance, and information systems programs are among the most frequently approved for contract CPT. Programs with a practicum, capstone, or experiential learning component built into the curriculum tend to have the most straightforward approval process because the school already has a framework for connecting outside work to academic credit. If your program doesn't have a formal CPT pathway, speak with your DSO early, as some schools require curriculum adjustments before authorization.
