CPT Entry Level Jobs
Entry level CPT jobs are a natural fit for students early in their academic programs, since most curricula require foundational work experience as a direct component of coursework. Whether your program is in business, technology, engineering, or the sciences, entry level roles give you the practical exposure your DSO needs to see before authorizing CPT, and employers hiring at this level typically have no USCIS filing requirements to worry about.

How do entry level jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT authorization requires that the work experience is an integral part of your curriculum, which entry level roles often satisfy because they provide the foundational, hands-on exposure your academic program is designed to produce. Your DSO will look for a direct connection between the job duties and your major. Entry level positions in fields like engineering, data, finance, and healthcare are straightforward to document because the skill-building aligns clearly with coursework objectives.
Can I work an entry level CPT job part-time while attending classes?
Yes, and part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) is the most common arrangement for students working entry level roles during active semesters. Many employers hiring at the entry level are accustomed to accommodating student schedules, especially at companies that recruit from university campuses. Full-time CPT is generally reserved for summer or other official academic breaks. Staying under the 12-month full-time CPT threshold is important if you plan to use OPT after graduation.
What do employers need to provide for CPT authorization at the entry level?
Employers do not file anything with USCIS and pay no government fees. What your DSO typically needs is an offer letter from the employer that outlines the job title, duties, start date, end date, and hours per week. For entry level roles, the offer letter language should describe duties specific enough to demonstrate a connection to your major. Generic letters that only list a job title without describing responsibilities can delay authorization.
How do I find entry level jobs that are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters jobs by work authorization type, so you can browse entry level positions where employers are already open to CPT candidates without sorting through listings that require permanent authorization. Entry level hiring at companies familiar with CPT tends to cluster in tech, consulting, finance, and research, and targeting employers who have hired F-1 students before significantly shortens the process.
Can I start an entry level CPT job before my CPT is officially authorized?
No. You cannot begin work until your DSO has issued a new or updated I-20 reflecting the CPT authorization for that specific employer and position. Starting before the authorization date on your I-20 is a status violation. Once you have an offer letter, work with your DSO promptly since authorization can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on your school's processing timelines.
