Full Time Jobs for CPT Students
Full-time CPT is available when your school is not in session, such as summer breaks or co-op semesters built into your program, and lets you work 40 hours per week without touching your OPT eligibility, as long as cumulative full-time CPT stays under 12 months. The position must be directly tied to your degree, and your DSO authorizes it, not USCIS.

What makes a job eligible for full-time CPT?
The position must be an integral or required part of your academic program and directly related to your major. Full-time CPT, meaning 20 or more hours per week, is typically authorized during official school breaks, co-op terms, or semesters where your program designates the work placement as credit-bearing. Your DSO reviews the job offer letter and confirms the academic connection before issuing the CPT authorization on your I-20.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, and this is the most important rule to track. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your entire program, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not count toward this limit regardless of how long you use it. Most students doing a single full-time co-op semester are well under the 12-month threshold, but you should confirm your running total with your DSO before accepting any full-time CPT role.
What does the employer need to do for full-time CPT?
Very little. There is no USCIS filing, no fee, and no petition process for the employer. The employer provides a written job offer letter describing the role, start date, end date, hours per week, and how the position relates to your field of study. Your DSO uses that letter to authorize CPT on your I-20. The employer does not need E-Verify enrollment for CPT, though some universities require it separately.
How do I find full-time CPT positions?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters jobs by work authorization type, so you can browse full-time CPT-eligible positions without sorting through roles that require sponsorship you do not have. Beyond that, your university's career center and co-op office often have employer relationships where CPT has been used before, which reduces back-and-forth explaining the authorization process to hiring managers unfamiliar with F-1 students.
Can I do full-time CPT during the regular academic semester?
Some programs are specifically structured around alternating academic and work terms, such as engineering or business co-op programs at schools like Northeastern or Drexel, and full-time CPT during those designated work semesters is standard. Outside of a structured co-op program, full-time CPT during a regular semester is harder to justify academically and most DSOs will not authorize it unless the work term is formally built into your degree requirements.
