How many hours per week can I work on part-time CPT?
Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week. This limit applies during active enrollment periods when classes are in session. During official school breaks, your DSO may authorize full-time CPT at 20 or more hours per week without it counting toward your part-time CPT history, provided the authorization covers the break period specifically.
Does part-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, regardless of how many semesters you use it, does not affect your OPT eligibility. Only full-time CPT accumulated over 12 months triggers OPT ineligibility. Many students complete multiple semesters of part-time CPT throughout their program and graduate with full OPT eligibility intact, making part-time CPT a lower-risk option for building U.S. work experience while still enrolled.
How do I get CPT authorized for a part-time position?
