CPT Part Time Jobs
Part-time CPT lets F-1 students work up to 20 hours per week during active semesters, making it one of the most practical ways to gain U.S. work experience without pausing your degree. Because CPT authorization comes from your DSO rather than USCIS, approval is faster than any other work authorization path, and employers need nothing more than your offer letter to get started.

Get Access To All JobsPart Time CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a part-time job eligible for CPT authorization?
The role must be an integral part of your established curriculum or directly related to your major field of study. Your DSO will require documentation connecting the position to your academic program, typically a course enrollment tied to the work experience. Internship courses, cooperative education programs, and practicum requirements are the most common academic structures that support CPT authorization.
How many hours per week can I work on part-time CPT?
Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week. This limit applies during active enrollment periods when classes are in session. During official school breaks, your DSO may authorize full-time CPT at 20 or more hours per week without it counting toward your part-time CPT history, provided the authorization covers the break period specifically.
Does part-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, regardless of how many semesters you use it, does not affect your OPT eligibility. Only full-time CPT accumulated over 12 months triggers OPT ineligibility. Many students complete multiple semesters of part-time CPT throughout their program and graduate with full OPT eligibility intact, making part-time CPT a lower-risk option for building U.S. work experience while still enrolled.
How do I get CPT authorized for a part-time position?
Start by securing a written offer letter from the employer that describes your role, start date, and confirmed hours per week. Bring that letter to your DSO and confirm the position ties to a registered academic course. Your school processes the authorization and issues an updated I-20 reflecting the CPT employer and dates. Most universities turn this around within a few business days once all documentation is submitted.
Where is the best place to find part-time CPT jobs?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters jobs by work authorization type, including CPT, so you can browse part-time openings without sorting through roles that require sponsorship or a different visa status. Because CPT employers need no USCIS filing and no additional cost, many are open to part-time arrangements with currently enrolled students, and Migrate Mate surfaces those opportunities directly.
