Get Access To All JobsDental Hygienist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does dental hygiene work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your dental hygiene program includes a required clinical practicum or externship course. CPT must be an integral part of your curriculum, meaning the work is tied to a specific course and your DSO can document that connection. General dental office work unrelated to a current course doesn't qualify. Confirm with your DSO before accepting any offer.
Can I work full-time as a dental hygienist on CPT?
You can work full-time on CPT during official school breaks or if your program's curriculum requires it. During the academic term, most programs authorize part-time CPT only, typically fewer than 20 hours per week, to preserve your full-time student status. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility, so track your hours carefully.
What documents does a dental office need from me before I start?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20, your Employment Authorization confirmation from your DSO, and a completed Form I-9. The dental office enters your information into the I-9 as your work authorization document. Some practices also ask for proof of your state dental hygiene license or a temporary permit, which you'll need to obtain separately through the state dental board.
How do I find dental offices that will hire F-1 students on CPT?
Start with your program's clinical coordinator, they typically maintain a list of approved or preferred practice sites. You can also browse Migrate Mate to identify employers who have previously hired F-1 students in dental or healthcare roles. Practices that already supervise students from accredited programs understand clinical documentation requirements and are far less likely to withdraw an offer due to unfamiliarity with CPT.
Will CPT work as a dental hygienist count toward future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT itself doesn't create H-1B visa eligibility, but the clinical experience and professional relationships you build can lead to a permanent job offer after graduation. If the dental practice wants to sponsor you for H-1B, they'll need to file a Labor Condition Application through DOL and meet prevailing wage requirements for your metro. Dental hygienist roles do qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines because they require a minimum of an associate degree in dental hygiene.
