Get Access To All JobsEstate Appraiser CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does estate appraiser work qualify as CPT for an F-1 student?
Yes, if your program includes real estate, finance, valuation, or business coursework that the appraisal work directly supports. Your DSO evaluates whether the role is an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to your field. Bring the job description and a course-by-course connection to your DSO meeting to make that case clearly.
Can I work as an appraiser trainee on CPT without a state license?
Yes. Every state requires appraisers to complete supervised trainee hours before sitting for licensure, and CPT is well-suited to that structure. The key requirement is that your employer has a Certified Residential or Certified General Appraiser on staff who can legally supervise your work under your state's appraisal board rules.
How do I find estate appraiser employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 CPT students?
Many small and mid-size appraisal firms haven't hired international students before and may hesitate when you mention F-1 status. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with work-authorization hiring history, which narrows your search to firms already familiar with I-9 and SEVIS compliance rather than ones encountering it for the first time.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my job title or duties?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer, start date, and role description as listed on your I-20. If your employer changes your title or duties materially, those changes may fall outside your authorized scope. Return to your DSO with an updated job description and request an I-20 amendment before the duties change, not after.
Does using CPT for an estate appraiser role affect my future OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT has no effect on OPT eligibility regardless of how long you use it. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT entirely. Since appraisal trainee programs often run long, track your cumulative full-time CPT days carefully and discuss the trade-off with your DSO before extending a placement past 12 months.
