Executive Compensation CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does executive compensation work qualify as a specialty occupation for CPT purposes?
Yes, if your program directly covers compensation strategy, equity plan administration, or executive pay design. CPT authorization requires your DSO to document that the work is an integral part of your curriculum, so you'll need to connect the role's duties to specific courses. Positions focused on broad HR generalist tasks without a compensation specialization may not qualify.
Can I do CPT in executive compensation if my degree is in finance rather than HR?
Finance degrees qualify when the executive compensation role emphasizes financial modeling, equity valuation, or incentive plan analytics rather than HR administration. Your DSO will evaluate whether the role's core duties map to your enrolled courses. Compensation roles tied to financial planning and analysis functions are frequently authorized for finance and business analytics students.
How do I find employers who sponsor F-1 students for executive compensation roles?
Migrate Mate filters employers by verified DOL wage filings in compensation and HR-adjacent occupations, so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness. Focus on companies with dedicated total rewards or compensation teams, since those functions are more likely to have the HR infrastructure to manage CPT paperwork and understand your work authorization status.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization in this field?
Your DSO typically requires an offer letter that specifies your job title, employment dates, work location, and a description of your duties. For executive compensation roles, the letter should reference the type of compensation work involved, such as long-term incentive plan administration or proxy data analysis, so the DSO can confirm the academic connection and complete the I-20 endorsement.
Does part-time CPT in executive compensation affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you complete it. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entitlement. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully with your DSO if you plan to convert to OPT after graduation in this field.
