Does a Game Designer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your school's curriculum includes game design, interactive media, computer science, or a closely related field and the role's duties connect to your enrolled courses. Your DSO evaluates the fit case by case. Roles focused on systems design, level design, or narrative design typically align well with interactive media and computer science programs.
Can I do CPT at an indie studio or a startup?
Yes. CPT authorization is not restricted to large employers. Any studio that can provide a formal offer letter describing your duties, start date, and work location satisfies the documentation your DSO needs. Smaller studios sometimes move faster on offers, but confirm they'll supply a written letter before you begin the authorization process.
How do I find Game Designer jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify studios and game companies that have filed for F-1 workers before. Employers with prior CPT or OPT experience won't need an explanation of your work authorization timeline, which shortens the hiring process and reduces the chance an offer falls through during the DSO authorization window.
What happens if my CPT Game Designer role involves remote work?
Remote CPT is permitted under F-1 regulations as long as your DSO authorizes the specific employer and position. Your I-20 should list the employer's address even for remote roles. Confirm with your DSO whether your school requires the employer to be within commuting distance or accepts fully remote positions for CPT authorization.
Does CPT game design work count toward H-1B specialty occupation experience?
CPT work experience in a game design role is legitimate U.S. employment and can be listed on an H-1B visa petition to document specialty occupation experience. Game Designer roles can qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in game design, computer science, or a directly related field.
