Does an Architect role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided your school's DSO confirms the position directly integrates with your degree curriculum. Architecture and related design disciplines qualify because the work connects to required coursework in studio practice, technical systems, or project management. Your employer's job description must specify duties that map to a current or upcoming course on your academic plan.
Can I do part-time CPT as an Architect student without affecting OPT?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT of 12 or more cumulative months eliminates OPT entirely. If your architecture firm offers a full-time summer role followed by a part-time semester engagement, each segment counts differently, so track hours precisely with your DSO.
What documents does an architecture firm need to support my CPT application?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter on company letterhead that includes your start and end dates, weekly hours, job title, and a description of duties tied to your field of study. Some programs also ask for a supervisor's name and the specific course the CPT fulfills. Firms that regularly hire F-1 students on CPT usually have these letters ready; firms without experience may need guidance on the format.
How do I find architecture employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for Architect roles filtered by employers with DOL LCA filing history. Firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications before are familiar with work authorization documentation and are more likely to handle your CPT paperwork correctly. This is more reliable than cold-applying to firms with no visible record of hiring international students.
Does CPT as an Architect count toward professional licensure hours?
That depends on your state's architecture licensing board, not your immigration status. Most states require documented work experience under a licensed architect, and CPT employment can qualify if the hours and supervision meet the Architectural Experience Program criteria set by NCARB. Confirm with your program coordinator that your CPT employer has a licensed architect on staff who can formally supervise and log your hours.
