Get Access To All JobsProduct Designer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Designer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your degree program's curriculum. Roles involving user research, interaction design, prototyping, or UX systems work typically satisfy the integral-part-of-curriculum requirement for programs in UX, HCI, graphic design, or information science. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements and the employer's job description.
Does my employer need to file anything with USCIS for CPT?
No. CPT authorization happens entirely through your school, not USCIS. Your DSO updates your I-20 to reflect the authorized employer, dates, and hours. The employer doesn't file a petition or pay any government fees. You do need an offer letter with specific details, employer name, role title, start and end dates, and weekly hours, before your DSO can process the authorization.
Can I work part-time as a Product Designer on CPT during the semester?
Yes. Part-time CPT allows up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and is the standard arrangement for students who want to preserve their full 12 months of OPT eligibility. Most design internships and contract roles can be structured at part-time hours. Confirm the schedule with your employer before your DSO submits the authorization, since the approved hours are fixed on your I-20.
How do I find Product Designer employers who regularly hire F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with consistent F-1 hiring history in design and UX roles, which is a practical signal that a company already understands CPT documentation requirements. Companies running structured internship cohorts or design residency programs are also strong targets, since they've processed I-20 authorization letters before and have onboarding workflows that account for CPT start dates.
What happens if my CPT end date passes before my project wraps up?
You must stop working immediately when your CPT authorization expires. You can't work on unauthorized CPT, even informally. If the project timeline extends, your DSO can issue a new or updated I-20 with a revised end date, but only if the work still qualifies as curriculum-integral and your program allows the extension. Request the updated authorization before the original end date, not after it lapses.
