Get Access To All JobsCreative Designer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Creative Designer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position connects directly to your enrolled program. Roles in graphic design, UX, brand design, or visual communication typically satisfy the curricular link requirement when your degree program includes coursework in those areas. Your DSO reviews the job duties against your academic plan to confirm the connection before issuing authorization.
Can I do CPT at a creative agency or freelance studio?
Yes. CPT can be authorized at agencies, studios, in-house brand teams, or even small independent studios, provided the employer has a legitimate business structure and can issue a formal offer letter or internship agreement. Freelance arrangements are generally not eligible because CPT requires a direct employer relationship with defined hours and supervision.
How many hours per week can I work as a Creative Designer on CPT?
During an active academic semester, part-time CPT is capped at 20 hours per week. Full-time CPT, which allows more than 20 hours, is typically available only during official school breaks or if your program requires a full-time internship for degree completion. Your DSO sets the exact hour limit on your authorization.
What documents does my design employer need to see before I start?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed on page two, your valid F-1 visa, and your passport. They'll also complete Form I-9 using these documents. Some employers request a letter from your DSO confirming the authorization dates and your program details, so have that ready before your first day.
Where can I find Creative Designer jobs that are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Creative Designer positions filtered by work-authorization type, so you can identify employers already familiar with CPT without manually screening each posting. Sorting by CPT eligibility is especially useful when your authorization window is short and you need an offer letter quickly to meet your DSO's submission deadline.
