The Engineering Technology Co-op Student provides mechanical and/or electrical testing support in the development of new components and products as well as in the improvement in performance, reliability and cost of existing components and products. This individual will work with engineering technicians and design engineers daily, participating in the setup, execution, data collection and reporting on engineering tests. In this role, the Co-op Student will:
Major Responsibilities:
- Perform testing to support customer requests and inquiries.
- Participate in development projects by executing concept validation, design qualification and manufacturing validation testing including documentation.
- Participate in reliability testing for new product development launch programs.
- Support product sustainability engineering and agency teams through test execution.
- Exposure to electrical and mechanical build up and teardowns.
- Exposure and experience in working with global cross functional teams.
Participate in training, specifically, onboarding, safety training, monthly lab training, soldering training and specific equipment training as applicable.
Preferred Education / Experience / Skills:
The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for learning about and using mechanical and/or electrical design tools to develop new designs and optimize those that already exist. Good listening, communication, and technical comprehension skills are required to develop successful designs in a team environment.

- Good verbal and written communication skills amongst global and cross functional teams, with a high attention to details.
- Basic mechanical skills and understanding of hand tools.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work towards a specific action plan, based on priority.
- Self-directed work ethic. A positive, can-do, whatever-it-takes attitude.
High School Diploma or GED

Does a Lab Associate role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your academic program requires or offers credit for it. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your department's curriculum integration documentation.
Can I work as a Lab Associate on CPT without a formal internship course?
It depends on your school's CPT policy. Some programs authorize CPT through an internship-for-credit course, while others allow it as an integral curricular requirement without a separate credit. You need your academic advisor to confirm the lab work satisfies a program requirement before your DSO can authorize the CPT on your I-20.

What happens to my CPT authorization if my Lab Associate job duties change mid-term?
If your employer reassigns you to a different lab function or department not covered by your current I-20 CPT authorization, you need a new DSO authorization before those duties begin. Working outside the scope of your authorized CPT is a status violation. Notify your DSO immediately if your role shifts significantly and get your I-20 updated.
Does CPT as a Lab Associate affect my chances of H-1B sponsorship later?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but the employer relationship you build matters. Lab Associate roles at research universities, pharmaceutical companies, and diagnostics firms are common H-1B sponsors because the work clearly meets the specialty occupation definition. USCIS evaluates the role at the time of the H-1B visa petition, not your CPT history.
