Get Access To All JobsProject Architect CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Architect role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your architecture program requires or offers credit for professional practice and the role involves tasks covered in your curriculum. Project Architect positions typically include construction documentation, code review, and consultant coordination, all of which map directly to coursework in accredited professional architecture programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description to that meeting.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Project Architect without affecting OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If the Project Architect role is full-time, confirm with your DSO how many semesters you've already used for CPT before accepting. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count against your OPT bank regardless of how many semesters you use it.
How do I find Project Architect employers who regularly hire CPT students?
Migrate Mate filters architecture and engineering employers by Labor Condition Application filing history, which shows which firms have supported work-authorized employees before. Firms with recent LCA filings are familiar with the documentation and onboarding requirements that come with CPT students, making the authorization conversation easier from the start.
What documentation does a Project Architect employer need from me for CPT?
The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. You handle everything through your school. Provide your employer with a copy of your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization and the authorized start date before your first day. Some firms also request a copy of your F-1 visa and passport for their I-9 file, which is standard practice.
Can I switch firms mid-semester if I get a better Project Architect offer?
CPT authorization is employer-specific, so switching firms requires a new authorization from your DSO for the new employer. Your current CPT authorization becomes invalid the moment you leave that employer. Request the new authorization before resigning, because working without a valid CPT authorization, even briefly, violates your F-1 status and can affect future OPT eligibility.
