Get Access To All JobsProject Site Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Site Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes construction management, civil engineering, or a related field and your DSO confirms the role is an integral part of your curriculum. The job must be directly tied to your academic program's learning objectives, not just broadly related to your major. A detailed offer letter listing your specific responsibilities on site strengthens the DSO's case for approval.
Can I work on multiple construction sites under a single CPT authorization?
CPT authorization is employer-specific and typically tied to a single work location. If your role requires you to rotate between project sites under the same employer, your DSO can usually accommodate that with a note in your I-20. Working for a different employer or on a subcontracted project under a separate entity requires a new CPT authorization entirely.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my construction project is delayed or ends early?
Your CPT end date is fixed on your I-20, and working beyond it without updated authorization violates your F-1 status. If the project extends, request a revised I-20 from your DSO before your current authorization expires. If the project ends early, you must stop working immediately and notify your DSO, since unauthorized work accumulates unlawful presence.
How do I find Project Site Manager employers willing to support CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for construction management roles, which signals they understand the sponsorship process. General contractors with dedicated HR teams are your strongest targets, since they're used to managing complex employment documentation across multiple jurisdictions and project types.
Does working as a Project Site Manager on CPT count toward the 12-month CPT rule for OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT across your academic program, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count toward this limit. Many construction employers require full-time on-site presence, so confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before accepting an offer to protect your OPT eligibility.
