Does a Product Owner role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your school determines the work is an integral part of your curriculum. Product Owner roles that involve Agile methodology, product strategy, or requirements analysis typically align with business, information systems, or computer science programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a detailed job description to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT as a Product Owner part-time while in classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, is the most common structure for students still completing coursework. It doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT during summer or co-op terms is also permitted but counts against your OPT if it exceeds 12 cumulative months.
What documents does my employer need for CPT?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. Authorization lives entirely at your school. You'll need a formal offer letter specifying the role, start date, hours per week, and work location. Your DSO uses that letter to update your I-20 with the CPT authorization before you start working.
How do I find Product Owner jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Product Owner roles filtered by employers with LCA filing history. Companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for similar roles have already navigated foreign national hiring compliance and are less likely to withdraw an offer after learning you're on CPT.
Does a Product Owner CPT job help with future H-1B sponsorship?
It builds a direct path. Employers who hire you on CPT have already evaluated your fit for the role and understand your work authorization timeline. Product Owner falls under specialty occupation given its degree requirements, which satisfies a core H-1B visa eligibility criterion. Confirming your employer's H-1B filing history before accepting an offer is a practical step worth taking early.
