Get Access To All JobsProduct Architect CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Architect role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, as long as your school program includes coursework in systems design, software architecture, or enterprise computing that the role directly builds on. Your DSO makes the final call on whether the specific job description meets the curricular integration requirement, so bring the full offer letter and a written explanation of how the work connects to your courses.
Can I do CPT for a Product Architect role at a startup that doesn't yet sponsor visas?
CPT itself doesn't require the employer to have prior visa sponsorship experience, so a startup without an H-1B visa history can still authorize your CPT work. The risk is post-graduation: if you're counting on that employer for OPT or H-1B sponsorship later, confirm early whether they're willing to go through that process. Many early-stage companies haven't run it before and underestimate the timeline.
How do I find Product Architect roles where employers already understand CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces Product Architect positions from employers with documented Labor Condition Application filing history, which is a reliable signal that the company has navigated work authorization before. Filtering by LCA history saves you from spending weeks in a process only to hit a dead end with an employer unfamiliar with F-1 work authorization.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the Product Architect role shifts significantly after I start?
If your core responsibilities change, for example from application architecture to pure project management, your DSO may need to reassess whether the role still qualifies as integral to your curriculum. Notify your DSO proactively if the job description shifts materially. Continuing on CPT under a substantially different role without updated authorization puts your F-1 status at risk.
Is full-time CPT for a Product Architect position a problem for future OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your eligibility for OPT entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Many Product Architect CPT placements run six to twelve months and are full-time by default. If you're targeting OPT after graduation, keep cumulative full-time CPT under 12 months or structure the placement as part-time, which your DSO can confirm based on your program timeline.
