Does a Learning Program Manager role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position's duties directly relate to your field of study. For students in education, instructional design, organizational development, or HR programs, a Learning Program Manager role typically satisfies the integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO makes the final call, so bring a copy of the job description to your authorization meeting and be ready to connect each core duty to a specific course.
Can I work full-time as a Learning Program Manager on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but using 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, structure your CPT as part-time (under 20 hours per week) or keep full-time CPT under 12 cumulative months. Talk to your DSO before accepting a full-time offer to map out the impact on your post-graduation authorization options.
What documents does my employer need to process CPT authorization?
Your school processes CPT, not your employer, but HR needs to provide documentation to support your DSO's approval. You'll need a formal offer letter with the start and end dates, employer address, job title, and hours per week. Some schools also require a description of how the role integrates with your curriculum, which you and your employer write together before submitting to the DSO.
How do I find Learning Program Manager jobs that support CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Learning Program Manager openings from employers with CPT and work authorization experience. Look for roles that explicitly mention training program development, learning management systems, or instructional content, since those map most clearly to education and organizational development degree programs. Avoid roles that are primarily administrative or operational with only a minor learning component, as those are harder to justify for DSO approval.
What happens if my CPT end date passes before the project is complete?
You must stop working immediately when your CPT authorization expires. Working past the end date, even by one day, is an unauthorized employment violation that jeopardizes your F-1 status. If the project runs long, ask your DSO to extend your CPT before the current authorization expires, not after. Your employer needs to provide updated dates and a revised offer letter to support the extension request.
