Get Access To All JobsDevelopment Director CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Development Director role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role connects directly to your enrolled program, such as nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field. Your DSO evaluates whether the job duties, including donor strategy, grant oversight, and team leadership, align with your curriculum. A detailed offer letter describing responsibilities strengthens that case considerably.
Can I do CPT as a Development Director while studying full time?
You can, but part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) is the safer path. Part-time CPT preserves your full 12 months of OPT eligibility after graduation. Full-time CPT still allows OPT, but one year of full-time CPT eliminates it entirely. Confirm your hour tracking with your DSO from day one.
How do I find Development Director positions open to CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by CPT authorization status so you can identify employers already familiar with F-1 work authorization requirements. Targeting organizations that have previously hired CPT students avoids delays caused by employers encountering the authorization paperwork for the first time during your onboarding timeline.
What documents does my employer need to authorize CPT for this role?
Your employer typically needs to provide a formal offer letter specifying your job title, start date, hours per week, location, and how the role relates to your field of study. Your DSO uses this letter to update your I-20 with CPT authorization. Some schools also require a learning agreement or a departmental faculty sign-off.
Does CPT experience as a Development Director count toward an H-1B application later?
CPT work experience is legitimate U.S. employment and can be listed on your resume and in any future H-1B visa petition as qualifying work history. Keeping copies of your offer letter, pay stubs, and updated I-20 creates a verifiable employment record. Development Director roles typically meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS requires for H-1B visa eligibility.
