Does a Development Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your program includes coursework in software engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related management discipline. Your DSO will verify that the role's responsibilities, such as sprint planning, technical roadmap ownership, or cross-functional team leadership, directly support your enrolled curriculum's learning outcomes before issuing CPT authorization.
Can I do CPT as a full-time Development Manager, or does it have to be part-time?
Both are possible, but full-time CPT carries a significant consequence: if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for post-completion OPT entirely. Many F-1 students in Development Manager roles opt for part-time CPT or limit full-time terms to stay under that threshold and protect their OPT window.
How do I find Development Manager jobs where employers already understand CPT?
Search for Development Manager openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented work-authorization filing history. Teams that have hired F-1 workers before are far less likely to withdraw an offer when you explain CPT requirements, and their HR teams already know what documentation they need to provide.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, start and end dates, weekly hours, and a brief description of your duties. Some schools also require a supervisor signature or a letter confirming the work is integral to your program. Check your school's specific CPT packet before sending anything to HR.
Is a Development Manager job considered a specialty occupation for future H-1B purposes?
Most Development Manager roles qualify as specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. You can cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for the relevant SOC code to confirm the degree requirements. However, USCIS evaluates each petition individually, so the job description in your offer letter needs to clearly reflect those technical requirements when your employer files.
