Get Access To All JobsManagement Consultant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does management consulting qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the consulting work is an integral part of your curriculum and your school has a mechanism to grant CPT, the role qualifies. Your DSO evaluates whether the position ties to a specific course or degree requirement. Roles involving business analysis, organizational strategy, or process improvement align well with business, economics, and industrial engineering programs.
Can I do CPT at a consulting firm that places me at client sites?
Yes, but the placement structure matters. Your CPT authorization covers the staffing or consulting firm as your employer of record, not the end client. Your I-20 lists the consulting firm's name. If the firm subcontracts you to a federal agency, confirm that the firm is enrolled in E-Verify, since federal contractors are required to use it.
What happens if my consulting project ends before my CPT authorization expires?
CPT is tied to your authorized employment period, not the specific project. If the engagement ends early, you stop working. You can't transfer unused CPT time to a new employer without a fresh DSO authorization on a new I-20. Notify your DSO promptly when a project ends so your records stay accurate.
How do I find consulting employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify consulting firms with active sponsorship history. Look for companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for business analyst or management consultant roles, which signals familiarity with work authorization requirements. Firms that already have international hiring infrastructure are far more likely to navigate CPT paperwork without friction.
Does using 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not count against OPT. Many consulting roles can be structured as part-time CPT during the academic year to preserve your OPT for post-graduation H-1B visa sponsorship timelines.
