Get Access To All JobsTechnical Program Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Program Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in project management, systems engineering, or technical operations. Your DSO will ask you to show how the job duties connect to specific learning objectives in your curriculum. Programs in computer science, engineering management, and information systems typically satisfy this requirement. Roles that blend both technical and managerial responsibilities are often easier to document than purely administrative positions.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Technical Program Manager and still use OPT later?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility, so timing matters significantly. If you're considering a full-time CPT engagement, calculate whether the experience is worth losing post-graduation OPT. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, has no impact on your OPT availability regardless of duration.
How do I find employers actively hiring CPT-eligible Technical Program Managers?
Migrate Mate filters employers by verified LCA filing history, so you can identify companies that regularly hire international talent in program management roles. This is more reliable than applying broadly, because employers with active technical filing histories already understand work authorization documentation and won't be caught off guard by your CPT I-20 amendment request.
What documentation does my employer need to complete CPT onboarding?
Your employer needs a CPT-authorized I-20 showing the employer name, start and end dates, and whether the position is part-time or full-time. They do not file anything with USCIS for CPT. Some employers also request a letter from your DSO confirming authorization. Provide both documents before your start date to avoid any Form I-9 complications on day one.
Do Technical Program Manager CPT roles count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
TPM roles generally qualify as specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related technical or engineering field. Your CPT experience in this title strengthens an H-1B visa petition by demonstrating U.S. work history in the occupation. USCIS evaluates the role's duties and degree requirement together, so ensure your offer letter describes technical responsibilities, not only coordination tasks.
