Get Access To All JobsProduct Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Specialist role qualify as an integral part of my curriculum for CPT?
It depends on your program and how the role is structured. Your DSO will evaluate whether the Product Specialist duties directly connect to your enrolled coursework, such as product management, business analysis, or marketing strategy. You'll typically need to provide your offer letter and a job description showing those academic ties. Generic generalist roles without a clear degree-field connection are harder to authorize.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Product Specialist, and what are the risks?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but any combination of full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely under USCIS regulations. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, especially a STEM OPT extension, track your full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorizations, not just the current one.
How do I find Product Specialist employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies with Labor Condition Application filing history in product-related roles. Employers who have already sponsored work visas are generally more familiar with employment authorization documentation. Startups and mid-size tech companies with active product teams often hire CPT students for defined-scope roles that map cleanly to a curriculum requirement.
What documents does my employer need from me to onboard me as a CPT student?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed on page two, showing the correct employer name, dates, and part-time or full-time status. They'll also need your visa stamp and I-94 record for Form I-9 verification. Make sure the employer name on your I-20 exactly matches the legal entity on your offer letter, because any mismatch can trigger I-9 compliance issues.
Is a Product Specialist role considered a specialty occupation for future H-1B purposes?
Product Specialist roles can qualify as specialty occupations if the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as business, computer science, or engineering. The O*NET occupation profile documents typical degree requirements, which is useful evidence when your employer files an H-1B visa petition later. Roles that accept any degree field, or none at all, are harder to defend as specialty occupations under USCIS standards.
