Get Access To All JobsBusiness Unit Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Unit Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role ties directly to your enrolled degree program. Business unit management positions typically qualify under MBA, management, or business administration curricula when your DSO can document the connection between your coursework and the job duties. Roles that blend strategy, operations, and team oversight generally satisfy the integral curriculum requirement, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements.
Can I work full-time as a Business Unit Manager on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but it carries a consequence: 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT after graduation. Most F-1 students in Business Unit Manager roles on CPT keep placement to part-time during the academic year and switch to full-time only during an approved break period, preserving OPT for post-graduation employment.
What documents does an employer need to hire me on CPT as a Business Unit Manager?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20, which lists the specific employer and authorized dates. They'll also complete standard I-9 verification. Some employers request a DSO letter confirming authorization. You cannot start work until USCIS-recognized CPT appears on your I-20, the offer letter alone doesn't authorize employment. Confirm your employer knows the I-20 is the controlling document, not a separate EAD card.
How do I find Business Unit Manager jobs that accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Business Unit Manager openings and filter for employers with international student hiring history. Many companies at this seniority level have HR teams familiar with CPT mechanics, but it's not universal. Prioritize outreach to mid-size and enterprise employers in your industry who have hired F-1 students before, since they've already built the internal process for I-20 verification and compliant onboarding.
What happens if my CPT authorization expires before the project ends?
You must stop working the day your CPT authorization period ends. Continuing employment beyond the I-20 CPT end date is an unauthorized work violation that can trigger SEVIS termination. If your employer needs you past the original end date, return to your DSO before expiration to request an updated I-20 with an extended authorization period. Don't wait until the final week, DSO processing can take several business days.
