Does a Real Estate Appraiser role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your degree program and your DSO confirms it meets the curricular requirement. Appraisal roles typically qualify for students in real estate, finance, urban planning, or business programs where valuation, market analysis, or property economics are part of the curriculum. Your school makes the final determination, not USCIS.
Can I work as an appraisal trainee on CPT without a state appraiser license?
Yes. Most states allow unlicensed trainees to perform appraisal work under direct supervision of a state-licensed supervisory appraiser. CPT authorizes the employment; the state licensing framework governs what tasks you can perform. Confirm your employer has a qualified supervisory appraiser before your start date, since the role's validity depends on that oversight structure being in place.
How do I find Real Estate Appraiser employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Real Estate Appraiser roles that are flagged as CPT-eligible. Many appraisal firms, government assessor offices, and commercial real estate companies have hired international students before. Checking employer LCA filing history can help you identify firms with prior experience navigating work authorization, which typically makes the onboarding process smoother for both sides.
Does CPT for a Real Estate Appraiser role affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how long you use it. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're planning to transition into OPT after graduation, track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the tradeoffs with your DSO before accepting a full-time appraisal position.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs a formal offer letter that includes the employer's legal name, your job title, the work location address, your start and end dates, and the number of hours per week. Appraisal firms should also indicate that the role involves supervised appraisal practice, since your DSO needs to confirm the work integrates with your coursework. Some schools also require a training plan or letter from the supervisory appraiser.
