Get Access To All JobsReceptionist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Receptionist job qualify for CPT under F-1 status?
A Receptionist role qualifies for CPT if it's an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to your field in a general sense. Programs in business administration, healthcare management, hospitality, or communications most commonly support this connection. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements and how the employer's duties map to your coursework.
Can I do CPT at a medical or dental office as a Receptionist?
Yes, healthcare front-desk roles are among the most common CPT placements for students in health administration, public health, or pre-clinical programs. The key is that your program must include coursework in healthcare operations, medical terminology, or patient coordination. Your DSO will confirm whether your specific program supports that placement before issuing CPT authorization.
How do I find Receptionist employers who accept CPT students?
Many employers are unfamiliar with CPT and won't list it as a hiring requirement, so direct outreach matters. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with a history of hiring international students, then confirm CPT acceptance with HR during the interview stage. Bring a clear one-page explanation of CPT to help HR teams understand your work authorization.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the Receptionist job changes locations or hours?
Any change to employer name, work site, or employment type, from part-time to full-time, requires a new CPT authorization and an updated I-20 from your DSO. Working under the original authorization after a material change is a status violation. Notify your DSO before the change takes effect, not after.
Does part-time Receptionist CPT count toward my 12-month full-time limit?
Only full-time CPT, 20 hours or more per week, counts toward the 12-month threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT, typically under 20 hours per week, doesn't accumulate toward that limit. If you're doing multiple concurrent CPT positions, USCIS counts total combined hours when determining full-time versus part-time status.
