Get Access To All JobsConsultant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Consultant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes applied consulting projects, practicum requirements, or client engagement coursework, your DSO can authorize CPT for a Consultant role. Management, IT, and financial consulting positions qualify most readily when the job duties directly map to your curriculum. Your DSO reviews the offer letter and position description to make that determination before issuing your updated I-20.
Can I do CPT at a consulting firm that places me with third-party clients?
You can, but your CPT authorization names the consulting firm as your employer, not the end client. If the firm rotates you across multiple client sites, your I-20 still lists the firm. Some DSOs require clarification that your primary employment relationship is with the firm itself. Confirm this arrangement with your DSO before accepting a project-based or staffing-model consulting offer.
How do I find Consultant employers who are experienced with F-1 CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which shows employers with Labor Condition Application filing history for consulting occupations. Firms that have filed LCAs previously are familiar with F-1 work authorization and less likely to withdraw offers over CPT paperwork questions. Prioritizing these employers reduces the risk of a last-minute hiring delay caused by HR unfamiliarity with your authorization type.
Does full-time CPT during a consulting internship affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. If your consulting engagement runs more than one academic term, structure it as part-time CPT to preserve your post-graduation OPT.
What should a Consultant job offer letter include for CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs the employer's legal name and address, your exact job title, start and end dates, hours per week, and a brief description of duties. For Consultant roles specifically, the duties section should reference the type of consulting, such as management analysis, IT systems, or financial advisory, so the DSO can confirm alignment with your degree curriculum. Generic offer letters that list only a title often cause delays.
