Does a Human Resources Manager role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your degree program and your school approves it. Human Resources Manager positions typically require a bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field. Your DSO will assess whether the specific job duties connect to your coursework before granting CPT authorization.
Can I do part-time CPT as an HR Manager intern and full-time later?
Yes. CPT can be part-time (under 20 hours per week) or full-time (20 or more hours per week), and many students start with part-time CPT while still in class. You must track total CPT usage carefully: 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility, which affects your post-graduation work authorization options.
What documents does my employer need to authorize my CPT?
Your employer typically needs to provide a signed offer letter specifying your job title, start and end dates, hours per week, and a description of duties that align with your academic program. Your DSO will use this to issue an updated I-20 reflecting the CPT authorization. Some schools also require a training plan or supervisor attestation.
How do I find HR Manager employers who understand CPT authorization?
Search on Migrate Mate, which shows employers with Labor Condition Application filing history in human resources roles. Employers already familiar with LCA filings tend to have HR teams experienced with work authorization processes, making CPT onboarding smoother. Prioritize companies with dedicated HR compliance or international hiring programs.
Does CPT for an HR Manager role affect my future H-1B sponsorship path?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but the experience you build matters. Human Resources Manager is a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, meaning it can support an H-1B visa petition after graduation if you pursue OPT. Employers who filed LCAs for HR roles during your CPT are already familiar with the prevailing wage and sponsorship requirements.
