Does an HR internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the duties directly relate to your degree program and your school approves it. HR roles covering recruiting, employee relations, compensation analysis, or HR information systems typically meet the integral curriculum requirement. Roles that are purely administrative with no connection to your field of study may not qualify. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your offer letter describes the position.
Can I do CPT in an HR role at a company that doesn't sponsor visas?
CPT authorization doesn't require the employer to be an H-1B visa sponsor or have filed LCAs previously. Any employer can hire a CPT student as long as they follow Form I-9 and E-Verify procedures and your DSO approves the placement. That said, employers with existing experience hiring international students tend to have smoother onboarding processes for CPT paperwork.
How do I find HR employers that understand CPT work authorization?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented Labor Condition Application history in business and HR-related occupations, which indicates familiarity with work authorization processes. Companies that have previously hired international employees are more likely to have HR teams that can handle your CPT documentation without delays.
Will CPT in HR count toward STEM OPT if my degree is a STEM field?
CPT itself doesn't affect your STEM OPT eligibility directly. What matters is whether your degree program is on the STEM Designated Degree Program list maintained by DHS. If your degree qualifies, you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after your standard OPT period regardless of your CPT employer or role, as long as the OPT employer meets E-Verify enrollment requirements.
Does full-time CPT in HR affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT regardless of how long it continues. If your HR internship is structured as full-time, plan your CPT duration carefully with your DSO to preserve post-graduation OPT options.
