Youth Villages is seeking a Public Relations Intern. The Public Relations intern will assist the Public Relations staff with day-to-day duties, special events and special projects. Focuses on completing tactics for public relations plans and creating content.
The Public Relations Intern will:
- Assist with media coverage round-ups and distribution
- Assist with the internal report for board of directors
- Assist PR team with administrative duties such as printing, purchasing office supplies, mailing items, travel planning, birthday celebrations, etc.
- Assist with interviewing and writing family stories, staff spotlights and other content for Youth Villages channels
- Support PR team with media opportunities and on-site events
- Takes photos at internal and external events as needed
- Maintains and supports creation of media lists and databases
- Monitors media for coverage
- Other duties assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Must be enrolled in bachelor-level or above studies in public relations or journalism or have completed a degree in those fields. Must have successfully completed a newswriting course or have equal experience in PR/newswriting.
LOCATION
This is an in-office position located in Bartlett, Tennessee, at the Youth Villages Operations Center with flexible hours to fit school schedule.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to apply high degree of computer skills including knowledge of hardware capabilities, word processing, data base management, and desk top publishing. Ability to use a calculator and other office equipment. Ability to manage multiple agendas with a minimum of supervision and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to apply skills in English grammar, punctuation, newswriting, Associated Press style and proofreading. Ability to maintain flexible hours as needed. Ability to apply skills in teamwork.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

No. Your employer can be a corporation, nonprofit, government office, or media company as long as the role involves PR-related duties your program covers. In-house communications teams at tech companies and healthcare organizations regularly hire F-1 CPT students. What matters to your DSO is the academic connection, not the employer's industry classification.
Can I do part-time CPT for a PR role while taking a full course load?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer by USCIS, doesn't count toward the 12-month limit that would affect your OPT eligibility. Many PR internships are structured as part-time during the semester for exactly this reason. Confirm the weekly hours are documented accurately on your I-20 CPT authorization.
How do I find PR employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?

What happens if my PR CPT role shifts into a different department mid-internship?
A change in job duties can invalidate your CPT authorization if the new responsibilities no longer align with your approved curriculum connection. Notify your DSO immediately if your role changes significantly, such as moving from media relations to data analytics. You may need a new CPT authorization reflecting the updated job description before continuing.
Does full-time PR CPT during a summer session affect my post-graduation OPT?
Full-time CPT exceeding 12 cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Summer full-time CPT counts toward that total. Track your cumulative CPT hours across all authorized periods carefully. Part-time CPT authorization, even across multiple semesters, never triggers this restriction regardless of total duration.
