Does an Administrative Assistant role qualify for CPT?
It depends on how the work connects to your degree program. A business administration or management student coordinating schedules, handling correspondence, and supporting operations can typically make a strong case. The key is your DSO agreeing the role is an integral part of your curriculum, not just tangentially related. Roles in legal offices or healthcare settings may require additional documentation showing the administrative work aligns with a specific course or practicum.
Can I work as an Administrative Assistant full-time on CPT?
Yes, but be cautious about the 12-month threshold. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility. For an Administrative Assistant role, part-time CPT during the semester and full-time during a scheduled break is a common structure that preserves your OPT. Confirm the exact hour limits in your authorization with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer.
How do I explain CPT to an employer who has never hired an F-1 student?
Bring your updated I-20 with CPT authorization and a short written summary explaining that you're authorized to work specifically for their company at the approved location for the authorized period. Emphasize that the employer has no petition, no USCIS filing, and no sponsorship obligation, your school handles the authorization. Most confusion clears up once the employer understands they only need to complete I-9 verification using your I-20 and passport.
Where can I find Administrative Assistant jobs that accept CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Administrative Assistant openings filtered for employers with F-1 hiring history. That track record matters because employers unfamiliar with CPT often stall offers while seeking legal guidance on work authorization they don't actually need to sponsor. Starting your search with employers who have hired CPT students before significantly reduces that friction.
Does my Administrative Assistant CPT job need to be related to a specific course?
Most schools require the CPT to be tied to either a specific course for academic credit or an integral component of your established curriculum. Vague connections, such as claiming general business exposure, are often rejected by DSOs. A stronger case names a specific course, internship seminar, or capstone project and explains how the Administrative Assistant duties directly fulfill that coursework requirement.
