Get Access To All JobsPersonal Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Personal Assistant role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes business administration, communications, organizational management, or a related field, and the job duties directly connect to that coursework. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles involving executive scheduling, correspondence, travel coordination, and project support typically meet the integral curriculum requirement when paired with a qualifying degree program.
How do I find Personal Assistant jobs that accept CPT students?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Personal Assistant and executive assistant roles posted by employers who have hired F-1 students before. Not all employers advertise CPT acceptance openly, so filtering by sponsorship history saves time and targets companies whose HR teams already understand the authorization process.
Can I do CPT as a Personal Assistant while taking classes full-time?
Yes. Part-time CPT, fewer than 20 hours per week, runs concurrently with your full course load and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT requires you to remain enrolled and, at many schools, stay registered for at least one credit hour. Confirm your school's specific enrollment requirement with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer.
What documents do I need to start a CPT Personal Assistant job?
You need an updated I-20 with CPT authorization from your DSO showing the specific employer and authorized dates. You'll also need your EAD or F-1 visa, a valid passport, and your I-94. Your employer uses these for the I-9. Don't start work before your CPT start date appears on your I-20, working without proper authorization violates your F-1 status.
Is a Personal Assistant job likely to lead to H-1B sponsorship after CPT?
It depends on how the role is classified. Personal Assistant positions mapped to a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines, typically requiring a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, can support H-1B visa sponsorship. Roles framed as general administrative support without a specific degree requirement are harder to petition. Review the O*NET profile for the occupation code your employer uses to assess sponsorship viability early.
