Get Access To All JobsHuman Resources Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Human Resources Specialist role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in human resources management, organizational behavior, or a related field and your school considers the work integral to your curriculum. Your DSO makes the final call. Roles focused on HR operations, talent acquisition, compensation analysis, or employee relations typically satisfy the curricular connection requirement at most programs.
Can I do CPT at an HR consulting firm or staffing agency?
CPT is tied to a specific employer and work location, so placement through a staffing agency creates complications. If the staffing agency is your employer of record but you work on-site at a client company, your DSO needs to authorize the staffing agency, not the client. Some schools decline to authorize CPT arrangements where the actual day-to-day supervisor is at a third-party site. Confirm your school's policy before accepting this type of placement.
How do I find HR Specialist employers who are likely to sponsor me after CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for HR-related roles. LCA history for HR Specialist or HR Generalist positions indicates the employer has already navigated the specialty occupation determination and prevailing wage process, making future H-1B visa sponsorship more straightforward. Employers with no LCA history for HR titles may not have a clear internal path for sponsorship.
Does full-time CPT as an HR Specialist affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT uses up your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against OPT. If your HR Specialist role runs longer than 12 months at full-time hours, plan your curriculum timeline carefully with your DSO before accepting the position.
What happens if my HR Specialist job duties change after CPT is authorized?
Your CPT authorization is specific to the role and responsibilities your DSO reviewed. If your employer significantly changes your duties, such as moving you from recruitment to payroll administration, you may need a new CPT authorization before performing those tasks. Notify your DSO as soon as your role scope shifts to avoid an unauthorized employment finding, which can jeopardize your F-1 status.
