Does a Regional Planner internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly relates to your degree program and your school approves it. Urban planning, public policy, environmental studies, and geography programs typically satisfy the curriculum integration requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your enrolled courses and the specific duties in your offer letter, so bring documentation that maps job tasks to your coursework.
Can I do CPT as a Regional Planner at a government agency?
Government agencies at the city, county, and regional level are common CPT placements for planning students. Federal agencies have additional hiring restrictions that may limit CPT appointments, so confirm eligibility directly with the agency's HR office. State and local planning departments generally have straightforward internship processes and are accustomed to coordinating with DSO offices on authorization paperwork.
How do I find Regional Planner employers who understand CPT authorization?
Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with Labor Condition Application filing history in planning and related fields. Organizations that have filed LCAs before are already familiar with work authorization processes, which means fewer explanations and faster offer-to-authorization turnarounds for CPT students.
What happens to my CPT if the Regional Planner role involves fieldwork across multiple sites?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer, not a fixed physical address, so multi-site fieldwork within one organization is generally acceptable. If you're assigned to multiple client sites under a consulting arrangement, clarify with your DSO whether each engagement requires separate CPT authorization or whether a single authorization covers the full project scope.
Does part-time CPT as a Regional Planner affect my OPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT of any duration does not affect your 12-month OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more during your program eliminates your standard post-completion OPT entirely, though STEM OPT eligibility is a separate determination. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and confirm the running total with your DSO each semester.
