CPT Research Technician Jobs
Research Technician roles in labs, biotech firms, and university research centers are a strong fit for CPT because the hands-on technical work directly extends classroom training in sciences, engineering, or public health. Your DSO must authorize CPT before your start date, and the position must tie to your degree program's curriculum.

Get Access To All JobsResearch Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Research Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your degree curriculum and your school's DSO approves it. Research Technician duties typically involve collecting data, running experiments, and supporting principal investigators, which directly maps to science, engineering, or public health degree requirements. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your offer letter describes the role.
Can I do CPT at a university research lab outside my own school?
Yes. CPT doesn't require the employer to be your own institution. A Research Technician position at a different university, a federal research center, or a private biotech lab all qualify as long as your DSO confirms the work ties to your curriculum. Your I-20 is still issued by your school, and the authorization must be in place before your first day.
How do I find Research Technician employers who are comfortable with F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Research Technician openings and filter by employers with verified sponsorship activity. Labs at universities, NIH-funded research centers, and biotech companies that regularly hire international students tend to have HR processes already built for I-9 and CPT documentation. Applying to employers with no prior F-1 experience adds onboarding friction.
What happens to my CPT authorization if a research project ends early?
Your CPT is tied to a specific employer and end date on your I-20. If the project ends before your authorized period expires, you should notify your DSO promptly. Working beyond the project's scope without updated authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Your DSO can amend your I-20 if you move to a new lab or project under the same employer.
Does using full-time CPT for a Research Technician role affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined by USCIS as under 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT regardless of how long you use it. If your Research Technician position is full-time, track your total CPT months carefully before committing to a long placement.
