Job Description
Imagine shaping the future of energy at a senior level. As part of Olsson’s Transmission and Distribution team, you’ll lead the design and delivery of high-voltage infrastructure that powers communities, supports renewable integration, and strengthens grid reliability. This Senior Engineer role is focused on PLS‑CADD‑based transmission and distribution line design. Candidates may come from a variety of engineering backgrounds commonly associated with power delivery, with expertise centered on line modeling, structure analysis, and constructible design. You’ll guide projects from concept through construction, mentor engineers and designers, and work directly with clients to deliver high-quality, defensible solutions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering and design of transmission and distribution line projects, with a strong emphasis on PLS‑CADD modeling and analysis.
- Develop and review transmission line layouts, structure loading, sag-tension calculations, and clearance analyses.
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor for engineers and designers, providing guidance, QA/QC, and design oversight.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines (substation, civil, environmental, right-of-way) to deliver integrated solutions.
- Interface directly with clients, utilities, and project stakeholders to define scope, schedule, and technical approach.
- Review and stamp engineering deliverables as appropriate.
- Participate in field visits, constructability reviews, and support during construction as needed.
- Contribute to process improvement, standards development, and best practices within the Transmission & Distribution group.
Qualifications
You are passionate about:
- Working collaboratively with others.
- Having ownership in the work you do.
- Using your talents to positively affect communities.
You Bring To The Team
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to contribute and work well with a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, civil engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in transmission and/or distribution line engineering.
- Advanced proficiency in PLS CADD; experience with PLS POLE and PLS TOWER is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading projects and performing detailed engineering calculations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience working with utility clients and applicable industry standards.

Get Access To All JobsSenior Simulation Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Senior Simulation Engineer work qualify as CPT for an engineering graduate program?
Yes, if the role directly integrates with your curriculum. Simulation engineering work, including modeling, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and systems validation, maps cleanly to mechanical, aerospace, electrical, and systems engineering graduate programs. Your DSO will review the job description against your course requirements to confirm the curricular link before issuing CPT authorization on your I-20.
Can I do CPT at a defense contractor if I need a security clearance?
You can apply for and accept a CPT role at a defense contractor, but security clearance eligibility is separate from CPT authorization. Most clearances require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence, so F-1 CPT students are typically limited to unclassified projects or positions that don't require a clearance. Confirm the clearance requirement with the employer before accepting the offer.
How do I find Senior Simulation Engineer employers who already sponsor F-1 students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for simulation and systems engineering roles, which is the clearest public signal that a company understands and has navigated F-1 work authorization. That removes the guesswork of approaching employers who may have no experience sponsoring international students.
Does full-time CPT during my final year affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Using 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you need OPT after graduation, you must keep full-time CPT under 12 months across your entire program, not just the current academic year. Part-time CPT, which is less than 20 hours per week, does not count against your OPT and is often a safer structure for a final-semester role.
What job duties in a Senior Simulation Engineer role are most likely to satisfy CPT's integral curriculum requirement?
Duties that directly reflect graduate-level coursework carry the most weight with DSOs. That includes developing physics-based simulation models, validating simulation results against experimental data, and applying numerical methods or control theory. O*NET lists the core competencies for simulation engineering occupations, which you can use to cross-reference against your program's course catalog when building your CPT request.
