Get Access To All JobsSpecial Ed Teacher CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Special Ed Teacher role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the placement is required or directly connected to your degree program. Special education, applied behavior analysis, and related graduate programs routinely designate supervised classroom placements as integral curriculum components. Your DSO determines eligibility based on your specific program requirements, not the job title alone, so bring documentation linking the role to your coursework.
Can I work as a Special Ed Teacher at a public school district on CPT?
Public school districts can hire F-1 students on CPT, but the placement must be authorized before your start date. Many districts also require a state teaching credential or emergency certification before extending an offer. Confirm the district's E-Verify status and any state licensure requirements with HR early in the process to avoid delays.
How do I find Special Ed Teacher jobs that accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Special Ed Teacher roles filtered by CPT authorization. Districts familiar with F-1 students typically indicate this in their hiring process or have an established relationship with nearby universities. Targeting employers with prior CPT hosting experience reduces the back-and-forth around authorization paperwork significantly.
What documents does my DSO need to authorize Special Ed Teacher CPT?
Your DSO typically requires a formal offer letter stating your employer name, job title, start and end dates, and whether the position is part-time or full-time. Some international student offices also ask for a faculty endorsement or course syllabus showing how the placement connects to your program. Compile these before submitting your CPT request to avoid processing delays.
Does full-time CPT as a Special Ed Teacher affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. USCIS rules state that 12 or more months of full-time CPT use eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against OPT. If your special education program requires multiple full-time student teaching semesters, track your total full-time CPT hours carefully with your DSO throughout your program.
