Does stage management work qualify as CPT for an F-1 student?
Stage management qualifies for CPT when your school determines the work is an integral part of your established curriculum. Roles involving production coordination, technical direction support, and rehearsal management typically satisfy this requirement for students in theatre, film production, or performing arts management programs. Your DSO makes the final determination and must authorize the position before your start date.
Can I do CPT as a stage manager for an unpaid internship or volunteer production?
CPT can be authorized for unpaid positions as long as the work meets your program's academic integration requirements. However, unpaid arrangements complicate future visa sponsorship: employers who don't pay wages can't file a Labor Condition Application for H-1B visa sponsorship later. If building toward post-graduation work authorization matters to you, prioritize paid stage management CPT roles.
How do I find stage management employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find stage management roles at employers with F-1 work authorization experience. Regional theatres, university production departments, and larger live events companies tend to have established processes for onboarding CPT students. Smaller independent productions often haven't hired international students before, which can slow your authorization paperwork.
Does CPT stage manager experience count toward H-1B specialty occupation eligibility?
CPT work experience in stage management can support an H-1B petition if the role involved duties typically requiring a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, such as theatre management or production design. You'll want documentation from your employer describing your responsibilities in detail, since USCIS evaluates whether the position qualifies as a specialty occupation based on job duties, not just title.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the production is rescheduled or cancelled?
CPT is tied to the specific employer and dates listed on your I-20. If a production shifts dates significantly or is cancelled, your authorized period may no longer match the actual work, creating an unauthorized employment risk. Contact your DSO immediately to update your I-20 with revised dates before you continue working, or before you begin if the start date changes.
