CPT Creative Jobs
Creative CPT jobs span graphic design, UX, content production, photography, and art direction. To qualify, your DSO must confirm the work is an integral part of your curriculum, so roles need a direct tie to your enrolled program. Many creative employers use project-based engagements, which fit CPT's part-time and full-time authorization structures well.

What types of creative jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
Roles that qualify are those your DSO can connect directly to your enrolled program's learning objectives. Graphic design, UX research, motion graphics, content production, and art direction typically qualify for students in design, communications, or media programs. Roles in creative fields unrelated to your declared concentration are harder to authorize, regardless of how relevant they seem.
Can I do CPT for a freelance or contract creative project?
CPT can cover contract and project-based work, but the engagement must be with a specific employer, not self-directed freelance work. Your DSO needs a formal offer or contract from the employer naming the role, dates, and hours. Platforms where you set your own clients and schedule don't meet the employer-of-record requirement for CPT authorization.
How do I find creative employers who understand CPT?
Start by targeting employers who have previously hired F-1 students in creative roles. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented work authorization filing history, so you can prioritize studios, agencies, and in-house teams that already have experience with CPT and OPT rather than spending time educating employers who are unfamiliar with the process.
Does working full-time CPT as a creative affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT, meaning more than 20 hours per week, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, at 20 hours or fewer per week, has no limit and doesn't affect OPT. If a creative internship or role runs full-time across two semesters, you could exhaust your OPT before graduation without realizing it.
What should I do if a creative employer has never hired an F-1 student on CPT?
Provide the employer with a clear explanation of what CPT requires from their side, which is primarily a formal offer letter with role title, hours, start and end dates, and the company's EIN. USCIS doesn't require employers to file a petition for CPT, so the burden is lower than for H-1B visa sponsorship. Many creative studios are willing once they understand the process doesn't involve significant legal fees or government filings.
