Tax Consultant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tax Consultant work qualify as CPT for an accounting or finance degree?

Yes, if the duties connect directly to your enrolled program. Tax research, return preparation, compliance analysis, and client advisory work typically satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement for accounting, finance, and business degree programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a detailed job description to your authorization meeting and map specific duties to your coursework.

Can I work full-time as a Tax Consultant on CPT during tax season?

Full-time CPT is allowed, but 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Many F-1 students in tax roles work full-time during busy season and switch to part-time the rest of the year to preserve their OPT. Coordinate your schedule with your DSO before committing to a full-time arrangement that spans an entire academic year.

What documents does a tax employer need from me to start CPT onboarding?

You'll need your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed on page two, your F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. The employer also needs your Social Security Number for payroll, which you can apply for once you have a CPT job offer in hand. Some employers request a letter from your DSO on university letterhead confirming your enrollment and authorization dates.

How do I find Tax Consultant roles where employers are already comfortable with F-1 CPT?

Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a history of DOL Labor Condition Application filings in tax and accounting occupations. Employers who have filed LCAs before have already navigated work authorization paperwork and are less likely to withdraw an offer when they learn you're on F-1 status. Firms with dedicated campus recruiting programs at your university are also strong targets since they've likely hired CPT students before.

What happens to my CPT authorization if my tax role changes scope or location after I start?

Any material change to your CPT work, new employer entity, substantially different duties, or a different work location, requires a new I-20 and fresh DSO authorization before the change takes effect. Remote work arrangements that shift your physical work location to a different state can also trigger this requirement. Contact your DSO as soon as you learn of a proposed change, not after it has already happened.
