Cybersecurity Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cybersecurity manager in California?
California does not issue a state license for cybersecurity managers, so the path runs through education, experience, and professional certification. Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in a technical field plus several years of progressively responsible security experience. Certifications such as CISSP or CISM carry significant weight in hiring decisions. Candidates who have worked through California's heavily regulated finance, healthcare, or defense sectors often have a concrete advantage because those industries demand rigorous, documented security programs.
How much do cybersecurity managers make in California?
Cybersecurity managers in California earn a median of about $138,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,070 for the lowest 10% to over $221,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cybersecurity managers in California?
Employers hiring cybersecurity managers in California right now include Apple, Palo Alto Networks, and Google, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of major tech headquarters, defense primes, large health systems, and financial institutions means demand runs across industries rather than concentrating in a single sector.
Which California cities have the most cybersecurity manager jobs?
San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale account for the largest share of cybersecurity manager openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its density of technology headquarters and venture-backed companies with mature security programs, while Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, aerospace, and financial services firms, and San Diego is anchored by a large defense contracting and biotech presence that requires cleared and compliance-focused security leadership.
Are there remote cybersecurity manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields, because cybersecurity management relies heavily on strategy, policy, and oversight rather than physical presence. About 34% of cybersecurity manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly the role has shifted to distributed work. Governance, risk, and compliance functions are the most consistently remote, while roles tied to on-site security operations centers or classified defense programs typically remain in person.
How can I get hired as a cybersecurity manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or senior analyst role first and building management experience from there. Large California employers in technology and healthcare, including major Bay Area tech firms and health systems like Sutter Health, frequently post security engineer and analyst roles that evolve into supervisory positions. Earning a CompTIA Security+ or associate-level CISSP credential signals readiness for leadership, and candidates who have led incident response efforts or managed a small project team, even informally, are positioned to make the jump ahead of peers with equivalent technical backgrounds.
Where can I find and apply to cybersecurity manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to cybersecurity manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings in one place. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each employer. No signup is required to search and apply.
