Data Engineering Manager Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data engineering manager in Pennsylvania?
The path to a data engineering manager role in Pennsylvania typically starts with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, followed by several years as a data engineer or analytics engineer. Pennsylvania does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh look for candidates who have led at least a small team, owned production pipelines, and can demonstrate experience in cloud-native or warehouse technologies relevant to their industry, such as financial data platforms or healthcare data infrastructure.
Which companies hire data engineering managers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring data engineering managers in Pennsylvania right now include Amazon, BNY, and Philips, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of large financial institutions, integrated health systems, and technology consulting firms means that data engineering manager openings tend to be tied to enterprise-scale platforms rather than early-stage startups.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most data engineering manager jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Reedsville have the most data engineering manager openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its dense cluster of health systems, insurance carriers, and financial services firms, while Pittsburgh draws hiring from technology consulting practices, regional banks, and Carnegie Mellon University's affiliated research and commercialization ecosystem that has seeded a growing tech sector in the city.
Are there remote data engineering manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of data engineering manager openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how portable the work is for teams building and managing cloud-based pipelines. The parts of the role most likely to stay fully remote are pipeline development and code review, while stakeholder alignment and team coaching tend to draw at least occasional on-site expectations from Pennsylvania employers.
How can I get hired as a data engineering manager in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a lead engineer or senior data engineer role first, then stepping into management as a team grows. In Pennsylvania, large health systems such as Penn Medicine and UPMC, as well as financial institutions like Lincoln Financial, regularly bring on senior individual contributors who grow into managing small data teams. Building a portfolio around modern orchestration tools and cloud certifications, and taking on mentorship or project lead responsibilities in a current role, signals readiness to Pennsylvania hiring managers evaluating first-time managers.
