Data Science Engineer Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a data science engineer job in Boston?
Focus your search on Boston's three dominant hiring clusters: Longwood and the broader Fenway corridor for life sciences and biotech, Kendall Square and Cambridge for research-driven tech firms, and the Seaport for fintech and enterprise software. Candidates with experience in machine learning pipelines, cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure), and Python stand out. Networking through local meetups tied to the Boston AI and data science community also gives applicants a measurable edge over remote applicants.
Which companies hire data science engineers in Boston?
Companies currently hiring data science engineers in Boston include XPO, Collegium Pharmaceutical, and BNY, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Boston's hiring base skews heavily toward biotech and pharmaceutical firms in the Longwood corridor, alongside financial services companies and early-to-mid-stage tech startups based in the Seaport and Cambridge.
Are there remote data science engineer jobs in Boston?
Yes, though availability varies by employer type since many Boston data science engineer roles involve close collaboration with research, product, or quant teams that prefer in-person or hybrid arrangements. About 41% of data science engineer openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with fully remote positions most common at enterprise software and fintech companies rather than biotech or academic medical centers.
How can I get a data science engineer job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Boston is targeting associate data scientist or junior data engineer roles at mid-size biotech firms and financial technology companies, which tend to hire earlier-career candidates than large pharmaceutical employers. Boston-area companies partnered with MIT and Northeastern often recruit co-op and recent graduate talent. Building a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ML pipeline work, even on public datasets, and contributing to open-source projects gives Boston hiring managers concrete evidence of hands-on capability.
Which industries hire the most data science engineers in Boston?
Boston data science engineer roles concentrate in Medical Devices and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Boston's density of world-class research hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and quantitative finance firms creates sustained demand for engineers who can build and deploy models at the intersection of complex scientific or financial data.
