Data Scientist Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data scientist in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts does not require a state-issued license to work as a data scientist. The typical path is a bachelor's degree in a quantitative field followed by a master's in data science, applied mathematics, or statistics, programs offered at institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Boston University, and Northeastern. Employers in Massachusetts place heavy weight on demonstrable project work, GitHub portfolios, and Kaggle competition history alongside formal credentials.
How much do data scientists make in Massachusetts?
Data scientists in Massachusetts earn a median of about $131,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,030 for the lowest 10% to over $206,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data scientists in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring data scientists in Massachusetts right now include XPO, STR, and Xometry, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of biopharma headquarters, insurance carriers, and asset management firms means many of the most consistent openings sit outside the familiar tech-startup category.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most data scientist jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham have the highest concentration of data scientist openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the combined pull of teaching hospitals, biopharma campuses, and financial services headquarters, while Waltham and Burlington attract openings from the Route 128 technology corridor where companies such as MathWorks and Raytheon maintain large analytics teams.
Are there remote data scientist jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 75% of data scientist openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally desk-based and tool-driven the work is. Roles focused on modeling, research, and reporting tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions embedded in clinical trials or real-time trading operations typically require regular on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a data scientist in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a data analyst or research associate role, which large Massachusetts employers in biopharma and insurance use as a feeder pipeline into data science teams. Organizations like Mass General Brigham and Fidelity Investments run structured new-graduate and rotational programs that place candidates with quantitative degrees into analytical roles before a formal data scientist title. A completed capstone project using publicly available health or financial data, combined with a master's degree from a Boston-area university, measurably improves competitiveness.
Where can I find and apply to data scientist jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to data scientist jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find the roles that match your background and apply directly through each listing.
