Data Scientist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data scientist in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a data scientist, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skills. Most Texas employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics, or engineering, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Building a portfolio of projects in Python or R and earning recognized credentials such as AWS Certified Machine Learning or Google Professional Data Engineer strengthens applications significantly in the Texas market.
How much do data scientists make in Texas?
Data scientists in Texas earn a median of about $122,090 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,540 for the lowest 10% to over $170,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data scientists in Texas?
Employers hiring data scientists in Texas right now include Apple, LTIMindtree, and The University Of Texas At Austin, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy corporations in Houston, financial services firms in Dallas, and technology companies in Austin means demand stays consistent across multiple industries throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most data scientist jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Houston account for the majority of data scientist openings in Texas. Houston's demand is driven by energy giants and healthcare systems, Dallas-Fort Worth by financial services firms and large corporate headquarters, and Austin by its dense technology sector, which includes semiconductor companies, SaaS businesses, and growing enterprise analytics teams.
Are there remote data scientist jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 25% of data scientist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how central this role is to analytical and desk-based work. Fully remote openings are most common in machine learning and business intelligence roles, while positions requiring access to proprietary data infrastructure or lab environments tend to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a data scientist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an analyst or junior data role first and building toward a data scientist title from there. Large Texas employers including energy companies in Houston and financial institutions in Dallas regularly hire for data analyst and business intelligence associate roles that accept recent graduates. Texas universities produce strong pipeline programs, and completing a capstone project or Kaggle portfolio before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over peers without hands-on examples.
Where can I find and apply to data scientist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to data scientist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers. Find roles that match your experience and specialization and apply directly to each one. No account is required to see or apply to listings.
